Data Analysis
- Comparison of
2006 - 2008 NYS Science Exams
- Identified the10 questions with the lowest student performance (% correct) for each year.
- Selected the standards that were in the bottom 10 for at least two of the three years.
- Selected the standards that were in the bottom 10 (for only one year) that had the poorest performance.
- Use DYO results to identify weaknesses by grade
- Compared 6th grade DYO # 2 from 2007-2008 with 2008-2009
- Compared 8th grade DYO # 1 from 2007-2008 with 2008-2009
- Identified the standards with the lowest performance for 7th grade DYO # 1 (2008-2009) and 7th grade DYO # 2 (2008-2009)
Identified VFO's
from NYS Science Exam
- PS1.1g: Moons are seen by reflected light. Our Moon orbits Earth, while Earth orbits the Sun. The Moon's phases as observed from Earth are the result of seeing different portions of the lighted area of the Moon's surface. The phases repeat in a cyclic pattern in about one month. (2006 - 30%, 2008 - 25%)
- PS2.1e: Rocks are composed of minerals. Only a few rock-forming minerals make up most of the rocks of Earth. Minerals are identified on the basis of physical properties such as streak, hardness, and reaction to acid. (2007 - 16%, 2008 - 22%)
- LE4.3a: Some organisms reproduce asexually. Other organisms reproduce sexually. Some organisms can reproduce both sexually and asexually.
(2006 - 31%, 2008 - 14%)
- PS2.2e: The Theory of Plate Tectonics explains how the solid lithosphere consists of a series of plates that float on the partially molten section of the mantle. Convection cells within the mantle may be the driving force for the movement of the plates. (2008 - 9%)

Action Plan to address
Identified VFO's
- Share results with science teachers during PD.
- Interventions: Smart Starts, Spiraled HW assignments, teachers share ideas for addressing these areas of weakness in PD
- More time during extended day on identified VFO's.
