GLOBE Program - Mr. Cipolla

GLOBE is a cooperative effort of schools, led in the United States by a Federal interagency program supported by NASA, NSF, EPA and the U.S. State Department, in partnership with colleges and universities, state and local school systems, and non-government organizations. Internationally, GLOBE is a partnership between the United States with over 100 other countries.

Over a million primary and secondary students in more than 12,000 schools have taken part in the program.

GLOBE started at I.S. 93 in April 2003. GLOBE provides our students with the opportunity to learn by:

  • Taking scientifically valid measurements in the fields of atmosphere, hydrology, soils, and land cover
  • Reporting their data through the Internet
  • Creating maps and graphs on the free interactive Web site to analyze data sets
  • Collaborating with scientists and other GLOBE students around the world.

At I.S. 93 our GLOBE study site covers a square area of 15km by 15km (for those of you still using the English system of measurement that is 9 miles by 9 miles), basically all of Queens.

As a GLOBE school we get to choose which protocol to study. We have chosen to study the weather and soil. In our student of the weather we collect data at our school weather station which is located in the front of the building. We study things like; current temperature, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, cloud cover, cloud types, the pH of rainfall, rainfall amounts, snowfall amounts, and relative humidity. In our soil study we record data for; soil temperature, soil moisture, the pH of the soil, type of soil, and soil health.
